Biophotonics is an emerging technologyconverging at the multidisciplinary interfaces of biology, photonics, materialsscience, and medical science, etc. Our research is focused on developing new materialsfor ‘photonic theranostics’ that harness a variety of ‘biophotonic’ attributes toenable early diagnosis, minimally invasive/precise treatment, and real-timeprognosis monitoring of intractable diseases. To this end, our research covers(1) materials science to design, synthesize, and characterize biocompatibleorganic/polymeric/nanoscale photonic materials, and (2) biomedical engineeringto develop a new paradigm of diagnosis and therapy by studying biology, biological matter-light interaction, and intrinsic optical properties ofmaterials in live cell/animal models. Other research topics include developinga new concept of drug delivery carriers and nanomedicine, etc.

Applications: In vitrodiagnostics (biosensor, chemosensor), bioimaging (molecular imaging, medical imaging), nanomedicine, photomedicine, theragnosis
